Environment Variables
OrioSearch uses environment variables for Docker Compose port mapping and application-level settings. All other configuration (search, cache, auth, extraction, LLM, etc.) lives in config.yaml.
Copy .env.example to .env at the project root and adjust as needed:
cp .env.example .env
Variables Reference
Docker Compose — Port Mapping
These variables control which host ports are mapped to container ports in docker-compose.yml.
| Variable | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
API_PORT |
8000 |
Host port for the OrioSearch API container |
SEARXNG_PORT |
8080 |
Host port for the SearXNG container |
BROWSERLESS_PORT |
3000 |
Host port for the Browserless container (requires --profile js) |
Example — run the API on port 8001 and SearXNG on 8888:
API_PORT=8001
SEARXNG_PORT=8888

ORIO_SEARCH_CONFIG |
config.yaml (relative to project root) |
Path to the YAML configuration file. Inside Docker this is set to /app/config.yaml automatically. |
Note: Redis (
6379) and Ollama (11434) ports are hardcoded indocker-compose.yml. Edit the file directly if you need to change them.
Relationship with config.yaml
Environment variables handle infrastructure-level concerns (port mapping, config file path). Everything else — search backend, caching, authentication, rate limiting, extraction, LLM, logging — is configured in config.yaml.
